about

My journey into “fusion” homemaking during the past 8 months has taken some interesting twists and turns.  I am completely surprised at where I have ended up.

Hi!  I’m Deirdre!  Today I am a stay-at-home mom, an Occupational Therapist, and an artisan… not necessarily in that order!  I started blogging DeirdreSpeak last fall to attempt to make sense of my identity and to challenge myself to adopt my mom’s (and by extension, my Gramma’s) role as a homemaker in the context of the 21st century, factoring in social media, global perspectives, and a professional career… not to mention the three men in my life who I adore.

What has emerged is this irrepressible sense of creativity — the desire to use my imagination and hands to create, shape, and perfect (hmmm… I definitely get this from my mom!).  As an Occupational Therapist, I value activities that are meaningful and therapeutic.  I want to be frugal, sensitive to the economic times, and yet create wonderful things in my world.

Enter the Sponge Flowers.  Indeed, I was NOT looking for this.  A creative Christmas project has turned into a small indie business with… potential?  I hope so!  I’m really excited!  Read about my “Inspiration” for this project on this site.  I love that I am collaborating with my 3-year-old son to create something that is one-of-a-kind and will be cherished for a lifetime… and hope to do the same for others… many others!

As for the blog… well, it’s likely still random goings on, my picks and recommendations… I have a running list – trust me, there is no shortage.  I just need to adopt some consistency with posting.  Love your comments and encouragement – keep them coming!

Yours truly,

Dee
